Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in May to recognize the contributions of Asian and Pacific Island descent in the United States. Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution in 1978 to commemorate Asian American Heritage Week during the first week of May. The date was chosen because two important anniversaries occur during this time: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843 and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad (by many Chinese laborers) on MAy 10, 1869. In 1990 Congress voted to expand it to a month-long celebration, and in 1992, the month of May was permanently designated "Asian Pacific American Heritage Month."

For East Winds, the Sandusky Cultural Center has invited six distinguished mid-career artists of far Eastern heritage who now live in the American Mid-west.

With awareness of cultural diversity and the positive values of artistic regionalism, the Sandusky Cultural Center  provides educational and entertaining exhibits that stimulate an interest in the fine arts, provide a focus for multicultural awareness, and introduce complex issues and challenging concepts.
